As districts increasingly bring in school-based mental health counselors (SBMHCs) to supplement services, school counselors (SCs) face opportunities and risks. SCs often engage with SBMHCs to facilitate intensive and individualized services for students with high needs. Strong partnerships between SCs and SBMHCs can better serve students' social/emotional needs. The role of SCs and SBMHCs also has the potential to become muddied with students, staff, and administration unsure of who to reach out to when a student needs assistance. With many school districts seeing budgets reduced, SCs can sometimes feel threatened by SBMHCs and the potential for districts to replace SCs with this “free labor?” We provide tips and strategies to partner effectively with SBMHCs, including clear differentiation of roles and responsibilities to protect the value of school counseling and communicate clearly with administrators and the school community the need for both types of professionals.
