Demetrius Cofield maintains an active research agenda on Black mental health, counseling engagement, and the impact of anti-Blackness in counseling relationships. This scholarship includes both conceptual and empirical studies on trust, therapeutic alliance, and the use of Black Critical Theory (BlackCrit) in counseling practice, supervision, and counselor education. Demetrius has extensive experience training counseling students in multicultural and social justice–oriented practice, with a focus on addressing race and power dynamics in clinical settings. This work informs the development of practical strategies to recognize and respond to racialized mistrust in counseling.
