F4 – Fatness as a Social Identity: Understanding the Impact of Body Size in the Counseling Relationship
Fat people, or those living in large bodies, remain an unprotected marginalized group in society. This presentation examines fatness as a social identity and its implications within the counseling relationship. Participants will explore weight stigma, internalized bias, and systemic oppression affecting counselors and clients in larger bodies. Emphasis is placed on developing culturally responsive, weight-inclusive practices that challenge dominant narratives and enhance therapeutic alliance, ethical care, client outcomes and counselor well-being.
