A drug recognition expert or drug recognition evaluator (DRE) is a police officer trained to recognize impairment in drivers under the influence of drugs other than, or in addition to, alcohol. In September 2010, the Ohio Technical Advisory Committee adopted the standards for the creation of the Ohio DRE program. In October the program standards were approved by the International Association of Chiefs of Police DRE Technical Advisory Panel (TAP).
