G2 – Adapting Counseling Interventions to a School Setting: Practical Strategies for Ohio School Counselors

Ohio school counselors are navigating increasing student mental health needs while balancing academic, social-emotional, and crisis response responsibilities. This interactive session provides a practical refresher on core counseling skills, integrating Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)-informed distress tolerance strategies. Emphasis will be placed on adapting these evidence-based approaches to fit the fast-paced, time-limited nature of school settings. Participants will explore how to structure brief, effective student conversations, increase motivation for change, and respond to students in emotional distress using concrete, student-friendly tools. Through case examples reflective of Ohio school contexts and guided practice, attendees will leave with ready-to-use strategies they can implement immediately.
