D1 – The Club No One Asked to Join: School-Based Grief Interventions

While grief is a normal reaction to death, children and adolescents grieve differently than adults. The loss of a significant person impacts all facets of their lives, including attendance, performance, behaviors and relationships in the school setting. This session will educate and help equip school counselors to understand theoretical frameworks of grief, understand and assess grief’s impact on youth and provide hands-on interventions that support youth ages 5-18 years old. Interventions include expressive art, storytelling, grief education, building coping skills and fostering community.
