D5 – Practice in Politics: Navigating Ethical Challenges in Unprecedented Times

This presentation will address the ethical and clinical challenges in navigating highly emotional, controversial or sensitive discussions around politics, race and current issues. We will review core ethical principles and considerations, the tension between social justice and neutrality and best practices for managing these difficult topics when clients bring them into the therapy space. We will present several case studies and facilitate discussion regarding effective strategies, the risks and benefits of therapist self-disclosure, and value of case consultation with other providers.
