I3 – Coexistence in Counseling: Working Across Difference Without Self-Erasure

Counselors routinely work with clients whose beliefs, identities, and values differ from their own. Counseling ethics emphasize understanding the client’s worldview and avoiding value imposition, yet many counselors feel pressure to suppress aspects of themselves to maintain the relationship. Identity-aligned niches are also increasingly common, raising questions about the profession’s capacity to work across difference. This session examines pressures toward self-erasure and presents strategies for maintaining presence when differences persist.
