J7 – What’s Beneath the Defenses? Protective Patterns in Religious & High-Control Contexts

Clients from religious and high-control environments often present with sarcasm, intellectualization, and other protective patterns that can be misinterpreted as resistance. This session reframes these responses as adaptive and relationally meaningful. Aligned with the theme “Elevate,” participants will learn how to support autonomy and elevate client voice by working with, rather than against, these patterns. Practical, trauma-informed strategies will be provided to enhance therapeutic alliance and reduce reenactment of control dynamics.
