H3 – Best Practices in Client Termination: Equipping Counselors from a Grief Perspective

Counselors often will experience many reactions to client termination, such as satisfaction, guilt, or anger. Another common, yet rarely discussed, experience may be framed through a lens of grief and loss. While termination is typically a time to reflect on progress and success, it may also elicit feelings of denial or regression. This presentation will review common client and counselor reactions to termination as well as review ethical best practices for the successful and emotionally satisfying closing of therapeutic services.
