G4 – Empowering Black Mothers: Prioritizing Mental Health, Resilience, and Care
Black maternal mental health continues to have impact on the overall wellness of Black communities. Black women and birthing individuals experience perinatal mental health disorders at a rate of 40% (MMHLA, 2023; Taylor & Gamble, 2017) and have a greater risk of mortality during and after childbirth. Specifically, in the state of Ohio, Black maternal and infant mortality rate are significantly higher than non-black populations (ODH, 2021). The session will focus on strategies to uplift Black mothers and birthing individuals in the treatment of black maternal mental health issues.
