Counselors diagnose for myriad reasons including communication, reimbursement, and treatment planning. Unfortunately, diagnosis has a complicated history regarding ethics and social justice, and has been used throughout history as a tool of oppression under the guise of medical objectivity. This presentation will explore the contentious history of diagnostic labeling as it impacts counselors and their clients today and offer concrete strategies for integrating ethics and social justice into diagnostic practice.
