Name
C21 — Help is a Dirty Word: Working with d/Deaf Clients and ASL Interpreters in Counseling Sessions
Date & Time
Tuesday, October 17, 2023, 2:45 PM - 3:45 PM
Description

How prepared are you to work with someone who is an ASL-user? d/Deaf individuals have a higher prevalence of mental health disorders than hearing counterparts at a rate of 2:1 (Fellinger et al., 2012), and are at a greater risk for suicide completion (Turner et al., 2007). Increasing access to competent care is critical and calls counselors to improve our ability to work effectively with diverse communities. Participants will leave with knowledge about collaborating with ASL interpreters to ensure best practices, resources, and increased confidence navigating communication/cultural barriers.
